In order to talk about tonsil stone remedies, we must first understand exactly what tonsils and tonsil stones are.
Tonsils are small flaps of flesh located on either side of your throat, just beyond the back of your tongue. These flaps are actually gland tissue, meant to trap bacteria and viruses and help fight infection. However, the tonsils also tend to collect small bits of food and mucous too, and when combined with sulfur producing bacteria infection may occur. When these materials become lodged on the flaps of the tonsils, they can eventually harden and compact, forming what we refer to as tonsil stones. One of the telltale signs of tonsil stones is a strong fecal odor eliminating from the back of the throat. Particularly bad breath may be an early signal of the presence of tonsil stones.
Once formed, what is the remedy for tonsil stones? Surprisingly, tonsil stones may actually be ejected by a good coughing spell, but this happens less often than one would wish, and is no guarantee that the tonsil stones won’t reoccur.
A probiotic culture known as acidophilus may have a beneficial effect on tonsil stones. Acidolphilus consists of the good bacteria that helps us maintain a healthy digestive track. Acidophilus keeps down the anaerobic, or bad, bacteria along with naturally occurring yeast. This largely homeopathic remedy may help to break down the tonsil stones and work to prevent new tonsil stones from forming. Recommended dosages and results vary, so check with your doctor first. Acidophilus is readily available at health food stores.
Today, antibiotics are usually tried first as a remedy for tonsil stones. Again, this has varying degrees of effect on the tonsil stones and largely depends on how advanced the tonsil stones have become.
Surgery may still be the most effective remedy for tonsil stones, even though tonsillectomies are not the common place childhood surgery they once were. A tonsillectomy involves the removal of the infected tonsils from the throat. Surgical removal of the tonsils should be carefully considered before going ahead. The tonsils are part of the body’s immune system, and though they have the chance of recovery from infection or tonsil stones, once gone they are no longer there to help filter bacteria and viruses.
Remedies for tonsil stones have varying degrees of success, and your physician is the most qualified person to determine a course of action to remove tonsil stones.

I get tonsil stones too and an ear, nose, and throat specialist told me to gargle with partial hydrogen peroxide and partial water. By the next day it’s gone, no surgery, this method disolves them. Hope this helps someone.

I developed this problem a couple of year ago, I’m 31. one thing I do to relieve myself out of these little bastards, I get a plastic straw and cut the tip at an angle (forming a scoop at the end) then I push up my tonsils with the back of my tongue. This will help with making the stones come out completely sometimes, if not I gently scoop the visibly ones out of the flaps. If i’m having a hard time, I’ll leave them alone. In a day or two I’ll try again. I hope this helps my fellow stinky breath brothers and sisters.

Hello,
I have a tonsils stone problem for a while and haven’t had luck shaking them. It wasnt so bad at first but last week the really bad breath started hitting me, my mucus was thick and nasty and I could smell that terrible bad breath odor on me that I had noticed from other people, yuck! I had tried mouth washed, mega brushing, gargle with hydrogen peroxide/water, salt water, there was some effect but it only lightened the odor for short while. I had also tried the thera breath products with the greatest effect, toothpaste (which I love cause it doesnt effect your taste), oral rinse, and throat spray, these products helped but again, only lightened the odor for a while. It seemed my problem is the smelly mucus is behind my nose in the throat where mouth wash and the like can never really reach. Two days ago I noticed Thera Breath had a new product, Thera Beath Nasal Spray, which described my exact problem and said it could help. I used it twice today and BAM, the bad breath oder and funky tasting mucus went away! It was like a miracle really, after trying all this other stuff I couldnt believe this could be so effective. The reason I think it is so effective is that you spray the liquid in your nose and let it drip down your sinus unto your throat, where it runs into the area you can not reach from inside your mouth while gargling etc. I had a slight burn in the effected area briefly after I used it and it seemed to work very quickly to eliminate that funky odor. I am not sure if continued use will stamp out the tonsil stones or not, I am hoping it will and expect it might since it is killing the odor so effectively. I guess I am lucky to have found a cure so quicly after the bad breath set in, it had just gotten noticable enough to make me self concious. I have associates and relatives that have had this same bad breath for years and years, I couldn’t deal with that. I am going to start keeping an extra bottle of the Thera Breath Nasal Spray handy to politely give to anyone I meet with the same problem, I am sure they will appreciate it later. If you haven’t had luck curing youf bad breath, and seem to have problems with tonsil stones and funky mucus in the back of your throat give this nasal spray a try, it worked like a miracle for me…..
PS I dont work for, own stock in, or have any other reason to promote the Thera Breath products. In fact, I was scepticle about them myself as they are pretty pricey and had not been 100% effective for me, that is until I finally got this new nasal spray. The toothpaste is really awsome, again pricey, oral rinse as well, same deal. Silver bullet was the nasal spray, I think that one product alone would have cured my problems…

Hydrogen peroxide, gargle with it every morning, its the main ingredient in Thera Breath products, it kilss bacteria. Its the secrete ingredient and it really works, but you have to first push the stones out with your finger. And garle peroxide everyday!!!!

Rich, I had my tonsils removed when I was about three years old and now I am 28. I noticed about half a year ago I was starting to get this really bad breath, my tongue turns all white ( full of bacteria ). I went to my doctor and he told me “ITS JUST BACTERIA, YOU NEED TO SCRUB IT OFF”. And so I did and my tongue turns pink again but it just comes back within a few hours and its white again. Then I was on the phone and I coughed out loud and then I felt something like a rock in my mouth and I take it out and its this little white rock, I look at it in the light and then I feel that its really soft… and then the smell hits me! OMG I said to myself, is this what is causing my bad breath!?!? I was out at a club yesterday and bam, I cough and there comes another little white rock… and so now I am here trying to figure out what the heck is going on, well I will try doing the whole salt water and then hydrogen peroxide thing… I’ll check back in a few days and let you all know how it goes.

I had been dealing with sore throat symptoms for a few days when I decided to goto the doctor. She bypassed the tonsil stone and told me it was allergies.
When I got home I picked at the tonsil stone and got it to come out… within twenty minutes my throat felt a million times better.
This is the first time this has ever happened, but my Mother has told me that she has experience these as well.
I am congested in my sinuses a lot and I feel like that may have something to do with it. I’m going to take my allergy medication everyday from now on and see if that helps.
I also was experiencing bad breath from time to time and couldn’t figure out why. I’m assuming it has to do with these little bastards.

I have suffered from tonsil stones for close to ten years. I used mouthwash all the time to try to alleviate the smell, but after a few hours it seemed to be even worse. A few months ago I started gargling with salt water every day (twice is best) and I haven’t had a tonsil stone since and my bad breath is cured. I put about two teaspoons of salt in a glass of warm water and I sip, swish, and gargle until the glass is empty. This is just what worked for me - I hope it helps someone else, too.

Hi to all. Many years ago my sister told me she had the same problem as me. You’re going to laugh but she told me to use a water-pick or any of those water sprayer things used to clean teeth. Use the lowest setting and shoot your tonsils. Funny, but it does help.
